Urinary leakage isn’t one single issue, and understanding the difference can reduce a lot of confusion. Dr. Hussein Warda explains that stress urinary incontinence happens when pressure is placed on the abdomen. Common triggers include coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting something heavy, or physical activity. In these moments, urine leakage occurs because the pelvic support system can’t counter that sudden pressure. Urge incontinence is different. It’s driven by an overactive bladder, where the bladder contracts unexpectedly and creates a sudden, intense need to urinate. Many women describe rushing to the bathroom and leaking before they can get there. When both patterns are present, it’s called mixed incontinence. Knowing which pattern fits your symptoms helps guide clearer conversations and more personalized care.
